Why Shoot on HD or HDV?
High Definition, simply put, is higher resolution video: more picture information than the existing standard definition (SD) broadcasts we watch in Europe (PAL system) or America (NTSC system).
Pal is currently 720 x 576 lines of information; HD can be either 1280 x 720 lines or 1920 x 1080 potentially almost 5 times more picture detail than SD. Also it is useful to note that HD standards are global standards as almost all HD TV’s and Monitors are able to display the differing frame rates.
Full HD, e.g. Sony’s HDCAM is equivalent to shooting a digitally 35mm film. HDV uses 25 megabytes per second digital video compression for high resolution high definition video that can be future proofed for the high definition future but also easily scaled down to today’s SD delivery formats. The advantage of HDV is it is now cost effective for productions companies to shoot your HD Corporate video production here in the uk on HDV for better quality, future HD-proof ability whilst retaining the cost effectiveness. What is HDTV?
There is a class of digital television that is getting a lot of press right now. It is called high-definition television, or HDTV. HDTV is a high-resolution digital format. The higher resolution picture is the main selling point for HDTV. Imagine 720 or 1080 lines of resolution compared to the 525 lines people are used to in the United States (or the 625 lines in Europe) -- it's a huge difference!
The formats used in HDTV are:
720p - 1280x720 pixels progressive
1080i - 1920x1080 pixels interlaced
1080p - 1920x1080 pixels progressive
"Interlaced" or "progressive" refers to the scanning system. In an interlaced format, the screen shows every odd line at one scan of the screen, and then follows that up with the even lines in a second scan. Since there are 25 frames shown per second, the screen shows one half of the frame every fiftieth of a second. For smaller screens, this is less noticeable. As screens get larger, the problem with interlacing is flicker.
Progressive scanning shows the whole picture, every line in one showing, every fiftieth of a second. This provides for a much smoother picture, but uses slightly more bandwidth.
New Cost effective HDV production solutions
The new HDV format is indeed making HDTV more affordable. Now that Sony has added the pro HDV cameras and an HDV decks we have new choices, such as shooting in 720p or 1080i. If you're shooting a documentary, special event, or corporate function, HDV is an exciting proposition: true HD on cost effective DVCAM tape. Dedicated video workstations can handle multiple, real-time streams of uncompressed HD and SD with effects so a stream or two of HD will pose little challenge. On the computer screen, HD footage looks phenomenal. HDV makes DVDs look old and blurry. You have to see it to be believe it.
